Two-day cultural extravaganza in city

CHENNAI, JAN. 17. The Department of Arts and Culture, the Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram and the South Indian Cultural Centre, Thanjavur, have organised a two-day cultural extravaganza in the city.

The event will feature a mix of rural and contemporary arts. It will include `karagaattam', `mayil attam', `kolaattam', `silambattam', `Bharatnatyam', `nadaswaram' and dance dramas.

Inaugurating the festival today, the Education Minister, S. Semmalai, said it offered a unique opportunity for people living in the city to appreciate folk arts. He said the culture of the State could be learnt and understood through these arts. The Government was offering an assistance of Rs. 500 a month to 500 artistes every year, he said.
