ALANGANALLUR (MADURAI DIST.), JAN. 17. One person was gored to death and several others were injured in a `jallikattu' at Alanganallur near Madurai today. Subbiah (30) of Mattaparai in Dindigul district, who sustained bleeding injuries while attempting to tame a bull died soon after admission to hospital. Two others were also admitted to the hospital with bleeding injuries. Over 160 persons sustained minor injuries as they trampled upon one another while fleeing from the advancing bulls. The first tier of a bamboo gallery opposite the `Vadi Vasal' cracked and sank by a few feet when people jumped following the entry of a bull between two poles beneath. However, the organisers evacuated the occupants in time and prevented the collapse of the gallery. The `jallikattu', an annual event conducted as part of Pongal celebrations, attracts a large number of people from the southern districts and tourists from abroad. L. Renganathan reports from Tiruchi In a jallikattu at Kalingapatti near Manaparai, a bull on the rampage gored to death A. Selvaraj (34) of K. Udayapatti. Several others were injured. Another person was killed at Vadamalapur in Pudukkottai district. V. Palanisamy (30) of Mettupatti, died on way to hospital. Four others sustained injuries and were treated as outpatients.
