Fresh norms on explosives soon

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, JAN. 17. The city police are contemplating formulation of fresh guidelines on handling explosive substances in court premises and police stations.

The move comes in the wake of an accidental fire, which occurred in the property room of a magistrate court here on January 13. Friction between two containers of dismantled explosive materials ignited the minor fire, which caused no damage to court property.

However, in order to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, the Commissioner of Police, Vijay Kumar, has sought foolproof guidelines from the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad and Forensic Science experts. The police are planning to retain documentary evidence of the explosives in the court and destroy the remains of the defused chemicals or move them to safer places. A final decision would be taken after considering all legal angles, Mr. Vijay Kumar, said.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate, M. Dhandapani, is said to have sought details on explosive materials stored in the property rooms of all the courts. The remaining explosive materials in the property room of the Judicial Magistrate (II), where the mishap occurred, would be destroyed after consulting the BDDS, police sources said.
