COIMBATORE, JAN. 17. The MLA of Valparai Constituency, Kovai Thangam, has urged the Chief Minister to put an end to felling of trees in Valparai region. In a statement here, he said the deforestation had been going on in the region for the past several years leading to serious drought. The tea estates and also the contractors not only felled the old trees but also the new ones. There had been several "irregularities" brought to the notice of the authorities on a number of occasions. Even after raising the issue on the floor of the Assembly and also taking it up with the Estimates Committee that visited Combatore recently, felling continued with impunity. Mr. Kovai Thangam asserted that such denudation would not only lead to serious drought but also affect the tea estates resulting in the loss of jobs to a hugenumber of plantation workers. Hence, he appealed to the State Government to impose a ban on tree felling in the region for at least 10 years.
