THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 17. As many as 3,000 students from 69 colleges will vie for excellence in 61 items in the Kerala University youth festival, which will get under way at seven venues in the city, from January 19 to 24. The university union chairman, Ben Darwin S.K., and the reception committee chairman, C. Jayan Babu, told presspersons here today that the festival will begin with a cultural procession to be taken out from the Kanakakunnu Palace at 3 p.m. As many as 5,000 students will participate in the procession which will conclude at the Senate Hall where the noted film actress, Revathi, will inaugurate the festival. The Minister for Cultural Affairs, G. Karthikeyan, will be the chief guest. Cultural leaders and those who have won the `kalaprathibha' title in the previous years will lead the procession. Floats and tableaux will lend colour to the procession. The venues have been dedicated to the memory of eminent persons in art and literature. The Senate Hall has been named after Samjuktha Panigrahi, the University College as Prof. Narendra Prasad Nagar, the Women's College as Semmangudi Sreenivasa Iyer Nagar, the V.J.T. Hall as Nagavally R.S.Kurup Nagar, the Sanskrit College after the poet, M.P.Appan, the Ayurveda College after the Hindi poet, Harivanshrai Bachchan, and the Fine Arts College as P.M. Gafoor Nagar. Dance competitions, mimicry and group dance will be held at the Senate Hall; monoact, mime and skit at the University College; string and percussion (eastern), kathaprasangam, tabla, fancy dress, Malayalam elocution and debate at the V.J.T. Hall; literary competitions at the Sanskrit College; Hindi recitation and elocution, English recitation, elocution and debate, akshara slokam, quiz at the Ayurveda College; painting and applied arts, cartooning and sculpture at the Fine Arts College; western string, wind and percussion instruments, vocal solo and group competitions, oppana and Malayalam recitation at the University College; classical music group song, vrindavadyam and ganamela, ottamthullal and kathakali at the Women's College and rangoli and collage at the Fine Arts College. The Leader of the Opposition, V. S. Achuthanandan, will inaugurate the valedictory function at the University College at 5 p.m. on January 24. The noted playback singer, K. S. Chitra, will be the chief guest. All arrangements have been made to conduct the competitions without delay. The competitions will conclude at 6 p.m. on all days, they said. The media committee is also hosting a website comprising the history of the union, youth festivals and details of those who have won the `kalaprathibha' and `kalathilakom' titles earlier in connection with the festival. Results also would be available on the website. A daily bulletin on the festival would also be brought out by the media centre.
