KOCHI, JAN. 17. The Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) appointed a sub-committee today to explore the possibility of the varsity regaining its status as an examination centre for the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS). The decision was taken at the varsity's syndicate meeting here. The exam centre was closed after the employees' unions at the university developed differences over the selection of invigilators for the exam. The agreement signed by the CGFNS approving Cusat as an examination centre for a period of one year ended in November last. The syndicate sub-committee with Lopez Mathew as convener will probe into the incidents that led to the closing down of the examination centre. The committee will prepare a report on the issue. The Cusat's decision came in the wake of the move by the employees' unions not to allow the conduct of the examination. They later denied that they had tried to disrupt the examination. Hundreds of nursing students looking for jobs in the U.S. faced difficulties following the cancellation of the exam centre in Kochi. It was learnt that the CGFNS authorities were considering selection of a new centre for conducting the examination. Today's syndicate meeting entrusted the Vice-Chancellor and the Faculty Dean, Babu T. Jose, to take steps to get recognition for the B.Tech. Marine Engineering course being conducted by the School of Engineering. A new proposal will be submitted to the Director General of Shipping for getting recognition for the course. The varsity will act as per the guidelines issued by the Director General of Shipping for obtaining recognition. These include appointments of faculty members approved by the Director General and a physical instructor for the conduct of the course. A fresh application would be filed before the Director General for getting the recognition. A syndicate sub-committee with E. M. Najeeb as convener will prepare a report on the feasibility of initiating academic programmes in the field of tourism. The decision to start tourism-related courses was taken in view of the rapid developments in the field. The varsity will consider introducing a Department for Tourism studies based on the report given by the sub-committee. The syndicate decided to cancel the B.Tech. Mechanical fifth semester examination (Mechanics of Machinery) conducted at the Cochin University College of Engineering, Kuttanad, following reports of mass copying. The varsity will take disciplinary action against the students and those involved in the conduct of the examination. A review of the existing system of the conduct of examination at the college will also be done in view of the incident. The meeting rejected an application submitted by the School of Communication and Management Studies for getting Cusat affiliation. The application was rejected on grounds that the school lacked the basic requirements for getting affiliation. A decision was also taken to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Council for Industrial Research for cooperation in the field of research studies. The meeting decided to prepare a plan and an estimate for construction of a university auditorium, Atmospheric Sciences section building and laboratory blocks for the School of Engineering and Computer Applications building.
