PALAKKAD, JAN. 18. The three-day World Water Conference "to conserve our precious soil, water and air'' will be inaugurated by Satu Hassi, former Minister for Environment, Finland, at Plachimada in Chittur on January 21. A cultural gathering will be inaugurated by the renowned Malayalam writer, M.T. Vasudevan Nair. On the second day of the conference, a seminar on various subjects concerning water would be inaugurated by the well-known environmentalist, Vandana Shiva. A public meeting will be held at Plachimada on January 22. It will be inaugurated by V.S. Achuthanandan, Leader of the Opposition. The noted critic, Sukumar Azhikode, will preside. The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president, K. Muraleedharan, the State secretary of the Communist Party of India, Veliyam Bhargavan, the IUML Secretary, E. Ahmed, the Janata Dal State president, M.P. Veerendrakumar, and the BJP State secretary, P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, will speak at the function. The concluding session of the conference will be held at Puthussery Panchayat Kalyana Mandapam on January 23. It was shifted to Puthussery because the Pepsi Cola bottling unit is located at Kanjikode in Pudussery panchayat, the organisers said. The `Plachimada Declaration' of the conference will be adopted at the concluding session at Puthussery panchayat, they said.
