NEW DELHI, JAN. 18. The European Union Trade Commissioner, Pascal Lamy, on arriving here tomorrow from Dhaka, is expected to discuss revival of the talks concerning the World Trade Organisation (WTO) under the Doha Development agenda with the Commerce Minister, Arun Jaitley. Mr. Lamy, on his first visit here after the Cancun Ministerial conference in September last,is expected to discuss both bilateral and multilateral matters, including agriculture and Singapore issues. He will also meet members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Trade and the Confederation of Indian Industry during his day-long stop over. Mr. Lamy's arrival assumes significance, as India had played a major role in the Group of 20 at the Cancun conference and voiced the opposition of the developing countries to the decisions taken by the EU and the U.S. on agricultural subsidy. The WTO general council was not able to reach any compromise last month at its meeting and a wide gap continues to exist between the developed and developing countries on this issue. Mr. Lamy may also discuss the timeframe for holding the next WTO Ministerial with Mr. Jaitley.
