Special officer likely for acquiring land for railway line

By Our Staff Correspondent

RAICHUR, JAN. 18. Basavaraj Rayareddy, Secretary-General of the All-India Progressive Janata Dal, has said that the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, has promised to appoint a special officer before March for acquiring land in Koppal and Raichur districts for the proposed Munirabad-Mahbubnagar broadgauge railway line.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, he said the Railway Ministry had made a budgetary allocation of Rs. 10 crore this financial year for the project. However, the work had been pending for four years as land had not been acquired.

He said the Railway Board, which sanctioned a detailed estimate for the work, had identified 1,600 acres of land between Ginigera and Raichur for the line. The cost of acquisition had been put at Rs. 16.75 crore. The Board had instructed the authorities concerned of the South Central Railway to commence land acquisition and take up the earthwork and the construction of bridges from both ends. In November last, deputy chief engineer (construction) of the Railway zone asked the assistant commissioners of the two districts to take steps for acquiring land, and said it was ready to deposit the money.

He met the Chief Minister recently and apprised him of the steps to be taken for starting the work. The department concerned had readied the tenders to be called for the first 38 km. from Ginigera and preparation of those for the remaining length was on. However, the present process of land acquisition adopted by the assistant commissioners would delay the work. A special land acquisition officer based in Sindhanoor should be appointed to speed up the process.

He said the district in-charge Ministers, MPs, and other elected representatives from the two districts should pressure Mr. Krishna for an early appointment of the official. He had discussed the issue with N.S. Bose Raju, MLA and Chairman of the Hyderabad-Karnataka Development Board, and asked him to convene an all-party meeting to form an action committee.
