`DMK-IUML ties are never strained'

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JAN. 18. There was no strained relationship between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) though they had been in different fronts in the last few years.

The relationship, which was renewed now, should be nurtured and protected, the DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, said here today.

Participating in the State IUML general council meeting, he cautioned workers of both the parties that attempts would be made by some people with a vested interest to drive a wedge between them. That the League invited him for its general council meeting showed that it considered him "one among them." Despite his illness, he managed to attend as he did not want to give room for suspicion. Despite their having been in a different camp, the State IUML leaders used to have regular contacts with him.

Mr. Karunanidhi was confident that the age-old relationship, cemented by the late Quaid-e-Milleth, C.N. Annadurai and Periyar E.V. Ramasami, would flourish in the coming days.

Earlier, the State IUML endorsed the high command's decision to join the progressive front led by the DMK and vowed to work for its victory in the Lok Sabha election.

The State president, K.M. Khader Mohideen, presided over the meeting, in which the all-India general secretary, E. Ahmed, MP, participated.
