JAMSHEDPUR, JAN. 19. West Zone pulled off a sensational two-run victory against defending champion South Zone to stay in contention in the Prof. D.B. Deodhar Trophy limited-overs inter-zonal cricket tournament at the Keenan Stadium here on Monday. After losing to East and facing elimination in the event of a second loss, West recovered from a bad start this morning to post a competitive total of 247 for seven in 50 overs. Despite a fine start by South, West kept its cool and came up with an outstanding fielding display to run out six batsmen as South folded up for 245 in 50 overs. At Paradip, East outplayed North Zone by eight wickets to register its second successive victory and earned five points, including a bonus. The win put East on top with nine points followed by South (five) and West (four). Both North and Central, which conceded the bonus points, are at minus 1. Skipper Hrishikesh Kanitkar led West from the front. The Maharashtra middle-order batsman held the innings together with a superb 103 (124b, 9x4) to lift his team from two for 28 to 247 for seven. This was his second century in the competition, the 122 against Central in the 2000-01 season being the other. Kantikar was involved in two fruitful partnerships for the fourth and fifth wickets. He and Nishit Shetty added 128 for the fourth wicket in 146 balls on a slow pitch that made strokeplay difficult. Kanitkar and Ranjit Khirid then put on 61 for the fifth. The West skipper, who began cautiously, grew in confidence as the innings progressed. He kept rotating the strike with some sharp singles. Dodda Ganesh was the pick of the South bowlers with four for 39. His victims were Vinod Kambli, Kanitkar, Khirid and Ramesh Powar. South made a sound beginning in reply. Openers Sadagopan Ramesh, who made 97 in the first game, and Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan added 98 in 104 balls. Vidyut was the first to leave after a well-compiled 47 (50b, 7x4) while Ramesh was dismissed after making a patient 42 (62b, 3x4). However, with the exception of Sridharan Sriram (54, 62b, 3x4), the rest of the South batsmen failed to consolidate on their good starts. And the six run outs, mainly due to poor judgment, pegged South back though the team was well in the race till the 35th over.
Easy for East
North, playing its first game, posted 225 for seven in 50 overs, thanks to Mithun Manhas (72, 108b, 6x4), Reetinder Singh Sodhi (68, 99b, 1x4, 1x6) and Dinesh Mongia (31, 40b, 5x4). East's Sanjib Sanyal returned with four for 48 in 10 overs while Laxmi Ratan Shukla chipped in with two for 15 off five overs. East reached the target in just 38 overs, losing just two wickets. M.S. Dhoni (40, 34b, 9x4), Devang Gandhi (75 not out, 96b, 8x4, 2x6) and Kiran Powar (79 not out, 84b, 8x4, 2x6) ensured East had no problems. In the next set of matches, East clashes with South at Agartala and North plays Central at Cuttack on January 23. The scores: West 247 for seven in 50 overs (Vinayak Mane 27, Hrishikesh Kanitkar 103, Nishit Shetty 47, Ranjit Khirid 34, Ganesh four for 39) beat South 245 in 50 overs (S. Ramesh 42, Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan 47, S. Sriram 54). North 225 for seven in 50 overs (Dinesh Mongia 31, Mithun Manhas 72, Reetinder Singh Sodhi 68, Sanyal four for 48) lost to East 227 for two in 38 overs (N. Haldipur 26, M.S. Dhoni 40, Devang Gandhi 75 not out, Kiran Pawar 79 not out).
