BANGALORE, JAN. 19. Defending champion India opened its campaign with a 70-run victory over Nepal in the Asia Cup Under-17 tournament Group I second phase league that commenced here on Monday. At the Chinnaswamy Stadium, India relied on skipper A.G. Pradeep (52 n.o., 67b, 4x4) and opener Ali Murtaza (50, 69b, 8x4) to stabilise the innings while Nepal battled hard to restrict the host. India scored 198 for eight in 45 overs and bowled out Nepal for 128 in 41.2 overs with leg-spinner Piyush Chawla (three for 27) being the pick of the bowlers. Earlier, India steered clear of Monday morning blues as openers Uday Kaul (35) and Ali Murtaza (50) posted a 90-run partnership in 21.2 overs. After Murtaza's dismissal, India suffered a mid-innings crisis as three more wickets fell with the addition of 20 runs. Skipper A.G. Pradeep, however, played the guiding hand with aplomb, as he chipped and charged and kept the scoreboard ticking while the tail wagged around him to edge closer to the 200-mark. The Nepal chase hinged on opener Sarad Veswakar's (49) vigil at the crease. Sarad played straight, drove with finesse but with his partners deserting with ambitious shots, the opener lost patience and his attempted slog-sweep off Piyush Chawla resulted in a top-edged skier. Sarad's dismissal left Nepal struggling at 116 for five in 34.4 overs and Piyush struck again in the last ball of the same over, scalping Bantu Bajaj to shut Nepal out of the match. At the IAF Ground, Pakistan scored an emphatic ten-wicket victory over Bahrain. Leg-spinner Fiaz Ahmed bagged three wickets while Bahrain mustered 75 in 38.1 overs and the Pakistan chase remained in cruise-mode as openers Nasir Jamshaid (23 n.o.) and Yasir Arafat (39 n.o.) notched the winning runs in 10.5 overs.
Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have it easy
At Visakhapatnam, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh scored easy wins over Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates respectively in the second round league matches. Sri Lanka dismissed Saudi Arabia for 84 and scored the required runs in less than an hour for the loss of three wickets at the ACA-VDCA Stadium. UAE, electing to bat, was restricted to 107 by Bangladesh at the Ukku Stadium. Bangladesh won by nine wickets.
The scores: At Bangalore: India 198 for eight in 45 overs (A.G. Pradeep 52 n.o., Ali Murtaza 50, Uday Kaul 35) bt Nepal 128 in 41.2 overs (Sarad Veswakar 49, Piyush Chawla three for 27). Bahrain 75 in 38.1 overs (Fiaz Ahmed three for 16) lost to Pakistan 77 for no loss in 10.5 overs (Yasir Arafat 39 n.o.). At Visakhapatnam: Saudi Arabia 84 in 38.1 overs (Imran Nasir 38, Sachit Pathirana four for 12, Shalika Karuna Nayaki three for 11) lost to Sri Lanka 88 for three in 13.1 overs (Sachitra Serasinghe 53 n.o., Ali Shahid three for 39).
