`Hindi chauvinism'

Sir, — This refers to the article, "Hindi chauvinism" (Jan. 18). I have never understood why some people insist on Hindi being made the national language. The reason given by them, that having one common language would serve the cause of national unity better, and that Hindi being the most-spoken language is the best choice is absurd. For the sake of unity, can we make India a Hindu nation?

Varun Venkateswaran,

Michigan
