College to offer course in biotechnology

BIDAR, JAN. 19. Karnataka College here plans to set up an institute to offer a five-year integrated postgraduate course in biotechnology and management.

Halahalli, president of the Karnataka Rashtriya Shikshana Samsthe, which runs the college, told presspersons here on Monday that the course, which was the first of its kind in the country, would help students procure two postgraduate degrees.

The Board of Studies of Gulbarga University had cleared the draft syllabus for the course, which had been prepared in consultation with some faculty members of Harvard University, he said. If the Syndicate approved the draft, other colleges in the State could also start the course, he added.

The college, set up in 1942, had grown from strength to strength, Mr. Halahalli said. It was being assessed by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. He said the library, which had over 36,000 books, and the administrative office were being computerised to provide students better facilities. A new block to house the library, additional classrooms, and a meeting hall of the alumni association had been constructed, Mr. Halahalli said and added that the college planned to construct an indoor stadium at a cost of Rs. 54 lakh, residential quarters for the staff, and a charitable hospital.

The college had 22 departments offering graduate courses, a research centre for doctoral studies set up by Kannada University, Hampi, and a study centre of the Karnataka State Open University. It also offered many self-financing courses in computer science, sericulture, and biotechnology, he added.

The college was the first among those affiliated to Gulbarga University to start courses in computer science and biotechnology, he said.

There were 74 full-time teachers and three part-time teachers to teach over 4,800 students. Seven teachers had Ph.D. qualification and eight had completed their M.Phil. Nine students of the college had won gold medals in the examinations conducted by the university in the past ten years, Mr. Halahalli added.

Students of the college were regulars at various sports and co-curricular activities, he said. The employment guidance cell functioning since the Seventies was helping students to prepare for various competitive examinations. A civil services examination coaching centre had been set up in the college with assistance from the Officers' Club, Mr. Halahalli said. The society was contemplating setting up of a 400-bed hospital in Bidar, he added.
