Bishop Savarios assumes charge

KOTTAYAM, JAN. 19. Bishop Kuriakose Mar Savarios took over as the fourth head of the Knanaya Syrian community at a special function held at the church headquarters on Sunday night. Catholicos Baselius Thomas I, led the special prayers on the occasion.

Bishop Savarios, who was consecrated as the Bishop in Damascus by the Patriarch of Antioch on January 15, arrived here on Sunday. On his way from Kochi, the newly consecrated Bishop was received at special functions at the St. Mary's Church, Mamangalam and the St. Jacob's Church, Ramamangalam. At Kottayam he was received by the Municipal chairman, B. Gopakumar, and others.

He offered the Holy Qurbana at the Kottayam Valiapally. He also offered prayers at the tomb of the first Metropolitan of the church Gheevarghese Mar Savarios.

From Kottayam, Mar Savarios, accompanied by scores of vehicles, was taken out in a `Hamsa Rath' to Chingavanam Dayara church. After offering prayers at the tomb of his predecessor Abraham Mar Clemis, he formally took over as the head of his flock.
