Declare Khajipet drought-hit: BJP

By Our Staff Reporter

CUDDAPAH, JAN. 19. Bharatiya Janata Party leaders staged a dharna in Ramapuram and farmers in Khajipet on Monday demanding that the Government declare the mandal drought-affected.

The BJP general secretary, Ramachandra Reddy, decried the non-declaration of Ramapuram mandal drought-hit which faced acute scarcity of drinking water and irrigation water. Ramapuram was a backward mandal, but mandal officials did not project the crop losses due to lack of irrigation water in their reports, he alleged.

The BJP State council member, Uma Umaheswaram, the vice-president, Dayananda Naidu, the mandal president, Bhakthavatsala Reddy, and the Telugu Desam Party leaders -- Raghava Reddy and K. Rami Reddy -- participated.

Earlier, farmers led by the KC Canal Jala Sadhana Samithi leader, M.J. Subbarami Reddy, staged rasta roko at Khajipet on the Kurnool-Cuddapah national highway.

Mr. Reddy criticised the Government for declaring only 25 mandals drought-hit while ignoring Khajipet mandal. The Khajipet Zill Parishad Territorial Constituency member, Govinda Reddy, charged the former MLA, S. Raghurami Reddy, with not evincing interest in raising farmers' problems in the Assembly.
