South African judge held on rape charge

MUMBAI, JAN. 19 . A South African High Court Judge, identified as Sirajuddin Mohammed Ibrahim Desai from Cape Town, was arrested and remanded to custody here today on a charge of rape made by a woman delegate from the same country to the on-going World Social Forum meeting here.

The 27-year-old woman is involved in raising awareness of AIDS awareness and works with her husband in the cause.

She was staying in the same hotel, where she was allegedly raped by the judge yesterday morning.

He was produced before a magistrate who sent him to police custody till January 23.

Mr. Desai will now have to apply for bail from a session's court. His lawyer has denied the charge.

She told the police, according to the remand application, that she met him only in Mumbai.
