Shirin Ebadi deplores Gujarat violence
By Aniket Alam
MUMBAI,
JAN. 19.
The Nobel Laureate, Shirin Ebadi, deplored the violence against the religious minorities in Gujarat and compared it to the violence which killed Mahatma Gandhi.
Speaking to the victims of the communal violence in Gujarat at the World Social Forum here on Monday, Ms. Ebadi said that they should learn from Mahatma Gandhi that "the answer to violence is not more violence."
She said the violence in Gujarat was an example of how violent and cruel human beings could be to one another.
She called for commemorating January 30, the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's assassination, as the International Day of Non-Violence.
Ms. Ebadi received a copy of a book on Gujarat violence written by the social activist, Harsh Mander, from Naseem Bano, who lost 22 members of her family in the riots.
She was moved by the pictures of riots which showed burnt and mutilated bodies and the pillage of shops and homes.
