NEW DELHI, JAN. 19. The Scottish explorer Cairn Energy today announced a huge oil discovery in Rajasthan, which the Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister, Ram Naik, described as the `New Year's gift' to the nation. The initial estimate by Cairn Energy for the oil in place of this discovery ranged from 450 to 1,100 million barrels and their preliminary reserve estimates are in the range of 50 to 200 million barrels. Cairn Energy had earlier informed the Directorate General of Hydrocarbon that the N-B-1 exploration well, which is now operating in the northern part of RJ-ON-90/1 block in Rajasthan Basin, has made a significant oil discovery in a large simple structure at shallow depths. Mr. Naik said in the years to come, Rajasthan would be the third largest state on the country's oil map. UNI
