Treasury restrictions relaxed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM JAN.19. Treasury cheques of up to Rs. 5,000 have been exempted from the treasury restrictions from tomorrow. The Finance Minister, K. Sankaranaryanan said today that it would be possible to encash these cheques without any special order or special permission of the Finance Department from the 15th of every month in future. He added that the restrictions would be further relaxed on January 27. The relaxations would cover 28 items, including D form cheques issued till December 31, all LC cheques issued till November 30 without ceiling on amount, Kudukbasree payments, salary and PF.

BSNL extends scheme

The Kerala Circle of the BSNL has decided to extend for a period of one month from February 1 to 29 the special scheme for reconnecting telephones disconnected for non-payment of bills. It will not collect the rental for the period from the date of disconnection to the date of reconnection if the other outstanding dues are cleared. The customers are to contact the Accounts Officers (TR) of the Switching Area (SSA) concerned or the head of the SSA for the service.

Entrance test centre in Dubai

The State Government has issued an order sanctioning a centre in Dubai, UAE, for conducting the entrance examinations for admission to the professional courses for the year 2004. The Commissioner for Entrance examinations (CEE) will decide on the centre, taking into consideration factors such as the number of candidates and the facilities available. However, private institutions run by individuals will not be considered. Candidates opting for the centre in Dubai will be required to remit an additionl fee of Rs. 7,000 by way of demand draft in a treasury account at the time of submitting the application.

SSLC grading details on website

The details of the grading system to be introduced for the SSLC examination from the next academic year will be available on the website. According to an official release, the guidelines applied for admitting candidates for higher classes will also be posted on www.keralaeducation.org.

Dissolve NCP: Kadannappally

KOCHI JAN. 18. The Congress(S) leader, Kadannappally Ramachandran, has said that the Nationalist Congress Party should be dissolved since it had forged a pact with the Congress. Addressing presspersons, he said that since the NCP was formed on an agenda that questioned the `foreign' credentials of the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, a poll pact between the two made NCP's existence questionable.

Goods train derails

KOLLAM JAN.19. Following the derailment of a wagon of a goods train on the down-line along the Eranakulam-Kollam line at Kandachira, near here, this evening, traffic through this line has been affected. The down trains were diverted through the up-line to Kollam from Perinad station. The goods train was stationed for unloading concrete sleepers when the mishap occurred. No one was injured. Traffic through the line is expected to be restored by midnight.

Factory closed in Palakkad

PALAKKAD JAN. 19. The BPL Sanyo, one of the TV manufacturing units of the BPL at Chandranagar in the town, was closed rendering 162 permanent workers jobless. Already 35 industrial units had been closed at the Kanjikode-Pudussery industrial belt in the District during the last three years due to various reasons. But no unit was closed down due to labour problems, the trade unions leaders here said.

AITUC district meeting

PATHANAMTHITTTA Jan. 19 . The annual district meeting of the All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) will be held here from January 23 to 28, acccording to Mundappally Thomas, AITUC district president. The CPI leader, P.K.Vasudevan Nair, will inaugurate the four-day meet. The AITUC State secretary, Kanam Rajendran, the CPI district secretary, M. Sukumara Pillai and the assistant secretary, P. Prasad, will address the meet.

Diabetes

detection camp

KOLLAM Jan. 19. The Santhigiri Ayurveda and Siddha Vaidyasala, a wing of the Santhigiri Ashramam, will organise a week-long diabetes detection and treatment camp here from January 20. The camp, to be inaugurated by the Local Administration Minister, Cherkalam Abdulla, forms part of the social service projects undertakan by the ashramam. As many as 200 such camps will be organised all over the State in the next four months, said the organisers of the camp.

Telephone exchange

A new OCB exchange will start functioning at Aryankavu in place of the existing exchange from 9 p.m. on January 20. Customers under the exchange who have the STD barring facility are requested to re-register their secret codes. The contact phone numbers are 2312598 (Chozhikode), 2211598 (Aryankavu) and 2222777 and 2292000 for assistance.

Elocution competition

The annual Sree Narayana Centenary Inter-Collegiate Debating competition and the Dr. M. Sreenivasan Memorial Elocution competition would be held at the S.N. College on January 30. For the elocution competition, the criterion is one student from each college and for the debate a team comprising two students from each college. Those interested in taking part should produce an authorisation from the Principal of the respective college and register by January 25. The winners would be given an ever-rolling trophy and a cash prize, a statement from the college said.

Revenue staff meeting

Thrissur Jan. 19. The ninth State conference of the Kerala Revenue Department Staff Association will be held at the Sahitya Akademi Hall here from January 26 to 28. The CPI leader, P. K. Vasudevan Nair, will inaugurate the conference. The District Collector, V. M. Gopala Menon, and the poet, Balachandran Chullikkad, will speak at a cultural meet, to be held at the same venue on January 26, the association president, R. Sukhalal, told reporters here today. He demanded a scientific restructuring of the Revenue Department. The validity of community, income and nativity certificates issued from the Revenue Department should be fixed for three years, he said.

Discourse in Ramayana

The Chinmaya Mission will hold a series of discourses on the Tulsidas Ramayana, by Swami Tejomayananda, on the Thekkinkad Maidan here from January 27 to February 1. Discourse on the Upadesa Saram will be held at the Chinmaya Mission Neeranjali Hall from February 28 (7 a.m. to 8 a.m.), says a press release.

Y's Men convention

The 66th Y's Men International Convention will be held at Kochi from August 12 to 15. The convention general convener, P. Gopinath, told reporters here today that 1,500 delegates from different parts of the world would attend the event. About 150 youngsters from different countries will take part in the Youth Convocation-2004, to be held at Santhigiri, Kochi, from August 9 to 15, as part of the Convention.
