THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 19. The Chief Minister, A K Antony, today assured the Assembly that the Government would take valid steps to restore the credibility of the Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC), which has been in the news for a series of question paper leaks. Replying to a call-attention motion, moved by K.C. Venugopal of the Congress, the Chief Minister admitted that the recent exposures relating to the conduct of examinations for recruitment in Government by the KPSC had created great apprehensions in the minds of thousands of youths who were looking forward to getting jobs. He said the case relating to the question paper leak in the LDC examinations in Kollam had been referred to the Crime Branch of Police after a preliminary inquiry by the PSC. He said that all efforts would be made to book the accused in the case and get them the maximum punishment prescribed under the existing laws. The Chief Minister said that re-examination in Kollam will be held this month itself. He said he had held discussions with the PSC authorities in the light of the recent media reports about the conduct of examinations. He said that the private secretary of the chairman, who was accused of corruption, had since been suspended from service. The PSC had informed the Government of its decisions to bring in some reforms in the conduct of examinations as part of its attempts to curb malpractice, he added. Mr. Venugopal wanted the Government to take strong action against those responsible for the malpractice in the PSC.
