NEW DELHI, JAN. 19. The North East People's Forum (NEPF), a conglomerate of political parties from the region, today decided to convert itself into a political platform and support the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). It also indicated a willingness to join the NDA, and has authorised its chairman and Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphu Rio, to discuss the matter with the NDA leadership. The NEPF, considered by many to be the brainchild of the former Lok Sabha Speaker and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader, P.A. Sangma, also came out in support of the stand taken by him on the question of alliances. In the resolution adopted by its executive committee, which met in the Capital this evening, the NEPF assured Mr. Sangma of its "continued support and cooperation." Mr. Sangma today clearly indicated that a parting of ways between him and the NCP chief, Sharad Pawar, was inevitable. He made it clear that he and the former Union Minister, V.C. Shukla, would be meeting Mr. Pawar on January 24 to thrash out the issue. "The confusion will end once and for all that day," he said. Mr. Sangma, who quit the Congress on the question of Sonia Gandhi's leadership, has been staunchly opposed to any kind of tie-up with the Congress as long as she remained its leader. He has also found support on this issue in Mr. Shukla, who joined the NCP before the last Assembly elections in Chhattisgarh. Mr. Sangma has, in recent days, made no secret of his desire to align with the NDA in the coming Lok Sabha elections. He met the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, on Sunday to discuss the issue. He has also held meetings with several senior NDA leaders such as the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, and the NDA convenor, George Fernandes.
