BJP seeks Governor's intervention on abolition of districts

By Our Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW, JAN. 19. The Bharatiya Janata Party today sought intervention of the Governor, Vishnu Kant Shastri, to get the districts and administrative divisions restored that had been disbanded by the Uttar Pradesh Government recently.

The Mulayam Singh Yadav Government had failed on all fronts and had taken the decision only to divert public attention from more pressing problems, said the State BJP chief, Vinay Katiyar. He announced plans to revert the decision of the present Government whenever his party was returned to power in the State.

Mr Katiyar led a delegation of the party MPs and MLAs to Raj Bhavan where a memorandum was submitted to the Governor listing "failures" of the State Government on various counts.

They also sat on dharna earlier during the day at the GPO park.

Talking to newspersons after meeting the Governor, Mr Katiyar said that UP had been overtaken by complete lawlessness and leaders of the Samajwadi Party were working hand and glove with the criminal gangs. Incidents of kidnapping for ransom, murder, loot and rape were on a rise. The ruling party leaders had been allegedly found working as mediators to collect ransom money from victims. Names of ministers figured in the list of criminals that spoke enough of the law and order situation in the State, he alleged.

Mr Katiyar said Mr. Yadav had made many promises while assuming the State's Chief Ministership but has forgot them. He had assured that he would ensure total payment of cane price arrears to farmers and look into their other problems. The Government was busy pleasing the capitalists in the name of promoting the State Development Council but had completely overlooked farmers' interests, the BJP leader said.

Mr Katiyar said the Government had enough money to organise events like the Lucknow festival and cultural programmes at Sefai, the home village of Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav, but had no money to sustain administrative units created by the preceding Governments. Such things cannot be tolerated and this Government would have to go.

He announced that on January 24 sit-in strikes would be organised by the party at all district headquarters to focus people's attention towards the failures of the Government.

Meanwhile, the PCC president, Jagdambika Pal, today announced plans to organise "Chetawani Diwas'' all over the State tomorrow to warn the State Government not to forget about people's problems.
