Assembly election as scheduled: Chautala

By Our Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH, JAN.19. The Haryana Chief Minister and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) president, Om Prakash Chautala, today asserted that Assembly elections in the State would be held as scheduled in February 2005 and not along with the ensuing Lok Sabha polls.

Talking to mediapersons after addressing a meeting of party workers at Panchkula, he said that the Parliamentary elections would be held before the scheduled time but not later than May.

He emphasised that the INLD would contest the elections on the basis of its policy and symbol. "The Lok Sabha polls would be a trailer to the Vidhan Sabha elections'' and these would provide an opportunity to assess the performance of the party.

There would be a period of about 10 months between these two elections which would be enough to undertake massive development in the State to further fulfil the aspirations of the people.

The Government had enough funds to continue the developmental activities at a faster pace in the State, he added.

Mr.Chautala further asserted that a final decision regarding the continuation of the alliance between the INLD and the BJP would be taken by the BJP High Command.

He admitted that the time was running out and he still had lot of work to do. The funds for developmental works would have to be utilised within the time frame otherwise these would lapse, he added.

While describing workers as the "backbone'' of the party, he said that the INLD "was trying to win the elections not because it had lust for power but to prove that it was committed to serve the masses as per the dictum of his late father, Devi Lal''.

Mr.Chautala said that he was addressing such party meetings to seek workers' opinion on various issues concerning the elections. All workers present in the meeting raised both their hands and unanimously authorised him to take all decisions on his own.

He said that he would take a decision in line with their wishes. While urging them to have patience, he asserted that "those speaking against the interests of the party would not be paid in the same coin but by pressing the button of the voting machine.''

He announced that the `Jan Sandesh' newspaper would be made weekly shortly.
