HC reserves order in Bhattal case

CHANDIGARH, JAN. 19. The Punjab and Haryana High Court today reserved its orders on two petitions seeking a stay on framing charges in a case of alleged misappropriation of Rs 20 lakhs from Punjab Chief Minister's Relief Fund by the Agriculture Minister, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, during her tenure as head of Government in 1996.

Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel reserved the verdict on two petitions filed by Ms. Bhattal and the Punjab Government following recovery of certain receipts, which had earlier gone missing, after hearing the arguments here this afternoon.

The Special Judge, R. S. Baswana, had on January 10, after hearing counsels of the State Government and Ms. Bhattal, both of whom stressed on the recovery of the receipts, had adjourned framing of charges against her till January 22 in view of filing of two petitions in the High Court on January 9.

The case was registered by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau under the Prevention of Corruption Act in May 2001 on a complaint of a Bhatinda-based advocate, Balwant Singh Dhillon.
