NEW DELHI, JAN. 19. The Deputy Prime Minister, Lal Krishna Advani, today said it was not fair to blame only the higher officials in issues such as the bad law and order situation and those at the lower levels should also be held accountable. Mr. Advani made this remark after inaugurating the new police station building of Jama Masjid police station in Central Delhi. The Deputy Prime Minister added that the position of the Station House Officer was one of the most vital in policing and they should be held accountable for the conduct of police officials in their jurisdiction. The new building, situated right across Dariba Kalan in Jama Masjid area, has come more than 23 years after the police station was formally started on August 2, 1980. It was carved out of Daryaganj, Hauz Qazi and Chandni Mahal police stations. The idea was to have a better vigil and control on communal situations. The police station was built in a temporary structure right behind the Jama Masjid and it came in handy during the days of Mandal and post-Babri Masjid demolition riots. Interestingly, Dargyaganj and Hauz Qazi police stations, which were started on January 1, and 2, 1913, respectively were the third and fourth police stations to be opened in the 20th century.
