Gang of cheats busted

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JAN. 19. Three persons, who posing as police personnel allegedly cheated several people of their money, were arrested by the New Delhi police today.

This morning, the police received a complaint from one Zulfikar Hussain, a resident of Poonch, alleging that he was cheated of Rs. 2,450 by a man claiming to be from the CID Branch of the Delhi police. Zulfikar and his uncle arrived in the Capital by bus around 7 a.m. and went to the Palika Bazar office of a travel agency for confirmation of an air-ticket to Dubai, where his father lives.

Zulfikar was told that the office would open around 11 a.m. He was waiting when he came across a man, who got friendly with him in no time. After a while, another man approached him and introduced himself as a CID Branch personnel. After posing some questions, the culprit asked Zulfikar to accompany him to the police station and forced him to sit in an auto-rickshaw stationed there.

On the way, the culprit asked Zulfikar to hand over the cash he was carrying, on the pretext of checking and noting down the numbers of the notes. After sometime, he put the notes in an envelope and returned an envelope to Zulfikar and threatened him not to report the matter to anyone.

After getting down from the auto-rickshaw, Zulfikar opened the envelope to find that it contained only newspaper pieces cut in the size of notes. Zulfikar immediately informed one constable Laxmi Narain, who was on patrol duty. The constable followed the auto-rickshaw and caught its driver. He recovered the cheated amount from the vehicle's boot.

In a follow-up action, the police arrested the main accused, Kishan Lal, and his accomplices, Ramesh and Rajender. During interrogation, they disclosed that they were committing such crime for the past 15 years. The police said the accused were involved in at least eight cases of cheating across the Capital. Their other involvements are being investigated.
