Youngsters held for kidnapping, killing child

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JAN. 19 . Apparently inspired by a newspaper report about the kidnapping of a child for ransom, four youngsters allegedly kidnapped and killed a four-year-old boy at Timarpur in North Delhi on Saturday. The accused, who have been arrested by the North Delhi police, also told them that they had offered bribes to two boys, aged 10 and 11, to lure the victim into their trap.

According to the police, Sant Nagar (Burari) police post in Timarpur received a tip off around midnight on Saturday saying that Dulare, son of Ubed Sharif, a resident of Nathu Colony in Burari, had gone missing. A case of kidnapping was registered and investigations taken up.

Following investigations, the police zeroed in on Golu (11) and Pankaj (13), both residents of Nathu Colony. They told the police that Dulare was with them till 4 p.m. on Saturday after which they had handed over the boy to Chandan (19) and Devender (19), Golu's elder brother. The police arrested Devender and three others -- Chandan, Sanjeev (20) and 16-year-old Chintu (name changed), all residents of Nathu Colony.

During interrogation, Chandan, a ruffian, told the police that he was sitting idle for the past few months and did not have enough money to meet his expenses. He, along with the other three, hatched a conspiracy to kidnap the child of a doctor in their locality. However, the plan was dropped when they realised that the doctor was well-known in the area and too much risk was involved. They then zeroed-in on Dulare, whose father is into manufacturing bags.

They promised Rs. 1,000 each to Golu and Pankaj to lure Dulare into their trap. The two boys took Dulare out of the house on the pretext of playing and then handed him over to Chandan and Devender on the fateful day. The duo was joined by Sanjeev and Chintu at Jagatpur village on the banks of Yamuna where they took Dulare on a bicycle.

Chandan tried to contact Dulare's father on his mobile phone to demand a ransom of Rs. 2 lakhs. Chandan had already bought a new SIM card to make the ransom call. However, he failed to make contact as the SIM card had not been activated.

Meanwhile, Dulare began crying inconsolably and the four gave him mercury, which they took out from a thermometer they were already carrying, in a bid to stop him from crying. However, the boy continued crying. The four then slashed the throat of the boy and threw him in the river. Chandan told the police that prior to kidnapping, they had already bought monkey caps, gloves, razor and a thermometer to ensure that their kidnapping bid did not fail.

The police have recovered Dulare's body at the instance of the accused and also the weapon of offence, the blood-stained clothes and gloves. The bicycle used by the accused to take him to Jagatpur has also been seized by the police. Further investigations in the case are on.
