Belgaum
By Our Staff Correspondent
BELGAUM, JAN. 20. The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President, B. Janardhan Poojary, has reiterated that the Congress preferred simultaneous elections to the Assembly and the Lok Sabha, although the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, has favoured his Government completing its term. Mr. Poojary has been favouring simultaneous elections for some time. He spoke on these lines on the eve of the Council elections while addressing a party meeting and later at a press conference here on November 24. His justification was that the Congress came to power in the State when simultaneous elections were held in 1989 and 1999. Addressing party workers and subsequently talking to presspersons here on Monday, he said that the Congress was well equipped to face the elections on its own and there would be not be an alliance with any party in the State. Alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party was spreading communal hatred with an eye on the elections, he said the rule of the National Democratic Alliance led by that party at the Centre had aggravated unemployment. The Centre had also opened up fully the domestic market for foreign players. Replying to questions, he said the KPCC had adopted a resolution expressing complete faith in the leadership of the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi, and added that she would be the party's Prime Ministerial candidate. On imposing a fee for aspirants of party ticket, he said the basic objective was to prevent non-serious candidates from trying for party ticket. If any candidate case could not afford the fee, people supporting his candidature would pay on his or her behalf. The party was preparing a list of potential candidates for the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. He hinted that certain legislators would be denied the ticket owing to their poor performance.
