Cuddalore
By Our Special Correspondent
CUDDALORE, JAN. 20. The people of about 66 villages in Neyveli have formed a federation to protect the rights of those who have given away their houses and land for the formation of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC). The new organisation has been christened as the "Federation for the protection of the rights of those who parted with their property and those who would have to hand over their land to the NLC." V. Perumal Naidu and A. John have been elected president and general secretary. At a meeting held recently, the federation passed a resolution calling upon the NLC management to provide suitable jobs for heirs of those who had given away their land, and adequate compensation. It also demanded that till the jobs were offered, prospective candidates ought to be given subsistence allowance. The federation insisted that the management must make the displaced persons as its shareholders, and give preference to them in its educational institutions. It stated that effluents from the NLC too had rendered land uncultivable, and therefore, called for adequate compensation to farmers for the losses suffered by them. According to Mr. John, a representation was made to the District Collector, Gagandeep Singh Bedi. If remedial measures were not taken within reasonable time, the federation would hold an agitation at Cuddalore.
