South Africa 604 for 6 decl. & 46 for no loss West Indies 301 & 348
Earlier, the start of the morning session was delayed by rain, 11 overs being lost before play resumed.
South Africa removed West Indies centurions Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan before rain again delayed its victory charge on the fifth day of the fourth and final Test.
West Indies followed on 303 runs behind after being dismissed for 301 in reply to South Africa's 604 for six declared.
Gayle was dismissed in the fifth over of the day when he lost his balance cutting a delivery from Makhaya Ntini and was caught by Neil McKenzie in the gully for 107.
Gayle's dismissal ended a stand of 174 for the fourth wicket with Sarwan, a West Indian record in Tests against South Africa.
Three overs later fast bowler Shaun Pollock trapped Sarwan in front with a ball that cut back at the right-hander. Sarwan batted for 350 minutes, faced 273 balls and hit 15 fours.
Dwayne Smith lasted just six balls before he had his off-stump uprooted by Ntini without scoring as West Indies slipped to 283 for six at lunch.
Just five overs were bowled after the interval before rain interrupted play again, but Pollock struck twice to have Vasbert Drakes caught by Herschelle Gibbs in the gully and trapping Ridley Jacobs leg before. West Indies, 2-0 down in the series, reached 317 for eight in its second innings at tea.
