ALAPPUZHA, JAN. 20. The Indian Farmers' Movement (Infam) would procure paddy from Kuttanad in the coming harvest season at the rate of Rs.750 per quintal, the Infam national president, Fr. Mathew Vadakkemuri, has said. At a press conference here today, Fr. Vadakkemuri said that his organisation would raise the procurement price if the Government fixed the price above Rs.750. He said that about 33 per cent of the paddy fields in Kuttanad were lying unused. "Farmers are reluctant to cultivate paddy as it does not provide adequate profit." Fr. Vadakkemuri urged the Government to announce a bonus of Rs.50 per quintal to encourage farmers to cultivate paddy. He said Infam had started a public limited company to produce rice from the paddy procured.
