Elders' woes

Sir,- - Now, the interest rates on fixed deposits in treasuries have been reduced by the Government taking into account the interest rates in nationalised banks. This has affected the senior citizens who are depositing money in Government treasuries. From press reports, it is learnt that Kerala Government has to repay loans amounting to Rs 3,000 crores. It is presumed that the rate of interest for loans taken by the Government will be very much higher when compared to the rate of interest now being given to the depositors.

Hence, it is only just and reasonable to increase the rate of interest now being given to term deposits of senior citizens. The interest payable for ADB loan and such other loans can be reduced to a great extent, if interest rates on fixed deposits in treasuries are increased since lakhs and lakhs of rupees will flow to treasures from senior citizens.

Road accidents

Sir,--The report appeared in on December 21, 2003 titled `State's roads are accident prone' is concluded with a remark of the Transport Commissioner, K.P. Somarajan. "This is the context against which a road safety authority is being set up in the State. Before setting up the road safety authority, it is better that policy making officers like Mr. Somarajan conduct an unbiased inquiry and find out how many accidents were created by the highway police.

The data pertaining to the above aspect also should be published in the paper. Without this data the figures given in the report remain incomplete and the proposed authority will be of no use to the State.

Minister's `inability'

Sir,--The news item `Media told to help check forest destruction' (December 31, 2003) was worth reading.

The question to be considered is to what extent our Ministers are sincere to take action against culprits involved in wanton destruction of our forests.

The press exposes destruction of forests by encroachers and land grabbers frequently. Our Ministers always express their `inability' to do anything in such matters since there is always `political pressure' on them'.
