BANGALORE, JAN. 20. The Karnataka Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, today ruled out any release of water from the Cauvery to Tamil Nadu. Citing a serious drought and drinking water problem, he said Karnataka had made its stand clear at yesterday's meeting of the Cauvery Monitoring Committee in New Delhi. Addressing a conference of Deputy Commisioners and chief executive officers of zilla panchayats here, Mr. Krishna said 162 of 176 taluks were reeling under drought and all rural pockets were experiencing drinking water problem. The three months from March would be very difficult because of drinking water scarcity. It was the responsibility of the Government to take up relief operations and provide drinking water to the thirsty millions in rural areas. As such, it was not possible to release water to Tamil Nadu. He said Tamil Nadu had asked for supply of seven tmcft (thousand million cubic feet) from the Cauvery and the Chief Secretary impressed upon the Centre the prevailing situation in the State and its inability to release water.
