Bhavanisagar water reaches Grand Anaicut

By Our Staff Reporter

THANJAVUR, JAN. 20. Water released from the Bhavanisagar dam, for irrigation in the Cauvery delta districts, reached the Grand Anaicut last night, according to Public Works department engineers.

It reached the Grand Anaicut via the Jeddarpalayam bed dam, the Kattalai bed dam and the Upper Anaicut.

Following a government order, 10,000 cusecs has been released every day from the dam in Erode district from January 14.

This is for the first time in the history of the Grand Anaicut and the Cauvery delta that water from the Bhavanisagar has been supplied for irrigation in the delta.

As per the order 7.6 tmcft (thousand million cubic feet) has to be released between January 14 and 21.

The engineers said water was being released from the Grand Anaicut from last night at 3,311 cusecs into the Vennar and 1,500 cusecs into the Grand Anaicut canal. There was no discharge into the Cauvery. However, farmers felt that the Bhavanisagar supply might not be sufficient to save the standing samba crop.

Meanwhile, water level at the Mettur dam stood at 30.45 feet (full level 120 feet) today.
