Junior doctors intensify agitation

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JAN. 20. Following failure of talks between the State Government and the Joint Action Committee of AP Junior Doctors' Association, more medicos went on relay fast intensifying their 39-day strike and ignoring the deadline set by the Government for resuming duty, which would make them eligible for taking MBBS/PG examinations.

A spokesman of the JAC said as part of the intensified agitation, it was concentrating on spreading the `grama darshini' campaign--undertaken to spread awareness among people in rural areas--to more districts. More medicos were heading for villages to tell people about the `wrong' policies in the Medical and Health sector.

He said the next course of action would be decided in a day or two. The JAC convened a parents' meeting at Gandhi Medical College, when its representatives sought to reassure the gathering that the expiry of deadline would not affect medicos.

Meanwhile, the Health Minister, K. Sivaprasada Rao, addressed a roundtable on `Private medical colleges and hospital charges' organised by the city branches of AP Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes' Association and Indian Medical Association.

While reiterating the Government stand on the issues raised by junior doctors, he said people could give their verdict on the Government policies in the Assembly elections. Representatives of the AP Government Doctors' Association, private medical colleges, AP Junior Doctors, Medical and Health Department and several NGOs attended.

To express solidarity with junior doctors, the APCC president, D. Srinivas, has called for dharnas at the district headquarters hospitals on January 23.

In a statement, he described as "mischievous" steps the collection of user charges and others which "hurt the poorer sections of society."

In another expression of support, the AP Committee of Students' Federation of India will organise "rasta roko" and "rail roko" demonstrations throughout the State the same day.
