Velugu village organisers told to play watchdog role

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR, JAN. 20. Village organisers of the Velugu project could play the role of a watchdog for the welfare of the poorest of the poor, the Minister for Employment Generation and Velugu, B. Gopalakrishna Reddy, said here today.

They could also play a multi-purpose role in the development of villages by reporting about the community problems to officials concerned and informing the administration about the anti-social and nefarious activities, including the sale of illicit liquor, among others.

Speaking at a review meeting on the implementation of Velugu project, the Minister suggested to Revenue Divisional Officers to handover the management of public distribution system fair price shops to village organisers if the existing dealers were found to be creating problems for people.

Distribution of benefits like old-age pension could be given to village organisers instead of channelising money through mandal and village-level officers. The official process was delaying the disbursement even up to six months in some areas, he said.

He said it was already being implemented in some areas of Chittoor district. Mr. Gopalakrishna Reddy said there was a proposal to upgrade bridge course centres into junior colleges and ANM training centres as there was criticism that the children rehabilitated from child labour and admitted to the bridge school were being left in the lurch after completing 10th class. They were neither able to continue the vocation of pre-rehabilitation stage nor getting new opportunity.

The Project Director of Velugu, I. Samuel Anandkumar, told the Minister that they had formed 37 mandal samakhyas and would form them in the remaining 26 mandals by March-end. The district Collector, Y.V. Anuradha, and the Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, N. Kistappa, participated.
