SHIMOGA, JAN. 20. The Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, D.H. Shankaramurthy, has said that the railway requirements of the people of Shimoga would be brought to the notice of the Minister of State for Railways, Basavaraj Patil Yatnal, when he comes here on January 31. He told presspersons here today that the long-pending demand for gauge conversion between Shimoga and Talaguppa and a new railway line between Talaguppa and Honnavar to connect it to the Konkan Railway would be brought up. The platform at the old railway station had to be extended and the station needed to be renovated, he said. Mr. Shankaramurthy termed the resolution adopted by the Shimoga City Municipal Council at its meeting here on Monday giving its approval for the development of the private bus stand at Millaghatta tank unfortunate and urged the councillors to reconsider their decision. Stating that he was opposed to the proposal to develop the private bus stand at Millaghatta tank, he recalled that when an all-party delegation met the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, in Bangalore, he had assured it that he would depute the Minister for Transport, B. Ramanath Rai, to visit the spot before finalising the matter. He said it was unfortunate that the municipality had taken a hasty decision before the Transport Minister visited the spot. He appealed to the Shimoga MLA, H.M. Chandrashekarappa, not to take an adamant stand on the issue without respecting the people's views. "Personally, I don't want to make it a political issue. But if the Congress wants to politicise it we are prepared for it," he said.
