CHENNAI, JAN. 20. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has decided to name the front it is leading in the State `Democratic Progressive Alliance' (DPA). The DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, today said the decision was taken at a meeting of district secretaries here. All 31 district secretaries and the top leadership attended. Asked whether the name was applicable at the national level too, he said the DMK christened the combine here DPA. He did not know if it would be acceptable at the national level. The DPA aimed at creating history in ensuring communal harmony and forming a secular government. The DMK had started preparing its manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections. A committee, headed by the former Union Environment Minister, T.R. Baalu, was constituted today for the purpose. Its members include Viduthalai Virumbi and A. Raja, MPs; K. Ponmudi, MLA, A.L. Subramaniam, N. Nathan, K. Sampath and S.P. Sivaprakasam. The headquarters secretary, T.K.S. Elangovan, would be the convener. The manifesto would be released at the party's Virudhunagar conference. The manifestoes of each of the constituents could differ from one another. The DMK would include issues specific to Tamil Nadu, apart from its own demands. On the Indian National League demand that it be given a few seats, the DMK chief said both the party's high-level committee and the district secretaries discussed the issue. There were ``two or three'' Muslim political outfits. The DMK had made its position clear to them. Efforts were being made to amicably resolve the issue. Answering questions, Mr. Karunanidhi said M. Natarajan, editor, Thamizharasi, had not approached the DMK seeking ticket to contest the elections. Asked about the Bharatiya Janata Party's contention that the Lok Sabha election would be a `Vajpayee versus Sonia Gandhi' poll, Mr. Karunanidhi said the DMK never projected personalities in elections. ``We seek the acceptance of voters based on our ideals. This time it will be no different.''
