THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, . JAN. 20. The Women's College, Thiruvananthapuram, took an early lead in the ongoing Kerala University Union Youth Festival, scoring 16 points, even as the results of 15 events were announced tonight. The University Departments, Kariavattom stood at second position with 14 points, while the University College was in third place with 12 points. The All Saints College, Thiruvananthapuram, was in fourth position with 11 points. T. P. Vidyamol of TKMM College, Nangiarkulangara, bagged the first prize in the Bharatnatyam competition held for girls. R. Anjana of the University College, Thiruvananthapuram, came second while Gouri Raj of Mar Ivanios College bagged the third prize. As many as 18 girls participated in the event. The results of the event held in the University Senate Hall was announced by midnight. Competitions were held for 17 items, spread over seven venues. Today's competitions got off to a late start, with the competitions scheduled to commence at 9-30 this morning getting delayed by more than an hour. While there was a sizeable audience for the mono act competitions, the competitors of such events as recitation and elocution in Hindi, performed before a very small gathering.
The judges of the Hindi recitation competition, however, recorded their appreciation of the quality of performance of the students. According to the festival organisers, the judges were especially appreciative of the good pronunciation skills of the competitors. Of the 25 students who competed in this event, only three were boys. The topic given for the painting competition was `Friendship'. The judges for this event, including the noted artist, B.D. Dethan, told the organisers that they were happy that there were more participants in this item compared to the previous festivals. Of the 34 students who participated in the painting competition, six were girls. The topic given for the Applied Arts competition was `Conservation of Nature'. Of the 17 candidates who took part, three were girls.
On Wednesday, competitions will be held for 21 events. Some of the results of the competitions held on Tuesday are given below. S (SCT College of Engineering, Pappanamcode), Balaji. D (SCT College of Engineering, Pappanamcode). Bharathanatyam (Male): Bobby Krishna (Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram), Srinath.
