BANGALORE, JAN. 20. This year's budget of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) will focus on upgrading infrastructure in its schools and colleges. Besides, administrative approval will be sought and financial allocations made to promote deserving teachers, according to the Mayor, P.R. Ramesh, here on Tuesday. Speaking at the inauguration of a two-day science exhibition and a workshop for BMP school and college teachers, the Mayor promised to take up promotions of teachers shortly. He was responding to complaints that many teachers in BMP schools had not got promotions in a long time. "It has come to my notice that there are `in-charge' headmasters and principals serving in our schools. I know some of them are really sincere and hard working, and deserve promotions," he said. The BMP would encourage teachers who wish to take up higher studies, Mr. Ramesh said. Initially, 10 teachers would be permitted to pursue higher studies. "It is surprising that of the 650 teachers in our institutions, only one teacher holds a Ph.D.," he added. Of the 78 nursery, 11 primary, 33 high school, and 12 junior colleges, computers had been provided to 14 schools. Computers would be provided to 19 more schools this year. `Encourage students': Mr. Ramesh advised teachers to encourage students and bring them on a par with those in private schools. Earlier, he gave away cash prizes of Rs. 10,000 each to eight schools for their performance in the past year. The Rajajinagar MLA, S. Suresh Kumar, wanted the BMP to pay attention to the standard of education and infrastructure. "It is important to have modern flyovers and grade separators in the city. But, equal interest should be shown in upgrading schools and colleges," he said. He said that the BMP had promised cash prizes for toppers in the S.S.L.C. examination (Rs. 5,000 each for those getting a first class, and Rs. 8,000 each for those who get distinction) this year. "But, the prizes have not been given so far. If they had been given during admission time, the money would have been of great help to the students," he said. Appeal to Mayor: Puttanna, MLC, who represents a teachers' constituency, appealed to the Mayor to encourage teachers by promoting them. "It is a big task to impart education to children from the lower sections of society. Our teachers are always working under pressure without recognition. Please promote deserving candidates," he said. The Chairman of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Harikrishna Punanoor, the Honorary Director of the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, C.V. Vishveswar, and the BMP Deputy Director, S.M. Shantaraju, spoke.
