BANGALORE, JAN. 20. The Minister for Bangalore Development, Ramalinga Reddy, today set a 15-day deadline to parking-lot contractors in the city to observe the contract conditions. After paying a "surprise visit" to parking lots on M.G. Road, Malleswaram, Kamaraj Road, and Gandhinagar, the Minister found that contractors were not observing many of the conditions of their contracts. He found that they had not put up an adequate number of boards giving details of the parking rates, their employees were not wearing uniforms or badges, and entries as specified were not being made on the counterfoils of parking tickets. The Minister was accompanied by the Mayor, P.R. Ramesh, and the Commissioner of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP), M.R. Sreenivas Murthy. People's complaint: They visited parking lots much ahead of the peak hour, and the lots on M.G. Road and Kamaraj Road were vacant. Passers-by commented that Mr. Reddy should have conducted the inspections during the peak hours to understand the problems faced by vehicle owners. A few vehicles were found parked in a no-parking area in Malleswaram. Few parking-lot contractors were present, and the Minister and the Mayor could seek clarifications only with the contractors' employees, who said they did not know that they were to wear uniforms. They said it was up to the contractors to observe the conditions of their agreements with the BMP. Mr. Reddy threatened to cancel contracts if the contractors failed to meet the conditions within a fortnight. He directed the BMP officials to ensure that the conditions were observed. Mr. Murthy said the construction of parking lots on J.C. Road, K.G. Road, and Magarath Road would be completed in six months. Tenders were being called for constructing parking lots in Gandhinagar (near Sukh Sagar restaurant) and on Dickenson Road. The Minister inspected the work on the Rs. 16-crore grade-separator at Rajajinagar Entrance. He was told that the work would be completed by June, about six months ahead of schedule.
