Bengal, Rajasthan in semifinals

VISAKHAPATNAM, JAN. 21. Bengal and Rajasthan moved into the semifinals of the Vijay Merchant Trophy all-India under-17 tournament. While Bengal progressed by virtue of its 226-run first innings lead over Haryana, Rajasthan defeated Maharashtra by seven wickets here on Wednesday.

Rajasthan off-spinner Madhur Khatri claimed five wickets and Bengal's Arindam Ghosh, who made 91 in the first essay, reached the coveted mark in the second and remained unbeaten on 102 (147b, 17x4).

Maharashtra, overnight 148 for four, was restricted to 215 at the Zinc Stadium. Both Madhur Khatri and Md. Ahmed finished with eight wickets in the match. Rajasthan knocked off the required runs for the loss of three wickets.

After Haryana failed to add to its total 150 for nine at the Port Stadium this morning, Bengal declared its second innings at 273 for seven. Arindam shared a 168-run stand for the seventh wicket with S. Bhattacharya (69, 125b, 10x4). Off-spinner Manish Verma claimed four wickets and leg-spinner Ranchal Chaudhary two.

Haryana made 12 for no loss in its second knock before the game was called off.

The semifinals, which will be held from Thursday, will pit Uttar Pradesh against Rajasthan and Punjab versus Bengal.

The scores:

Bengal 376 and 273 for seven decl. (Arindam Ghosh 102 not out, S. Bhattacharya 69, Abhishek Poddar 36, Manish Verma four for 77) drew with Haryana 150 and 12 for no loss.

Maharashtra 155 and 215 (Vaibhav Kendale 52, Mansingh Nigade 29, Nikhil Paradkar 27, Ganesh Gaikwad 25, Madhur Khatri five for 62, Md. Ahmed four for 78) lost to Rajasthan 239 and 134 for three (Puneet Yadav 44 not out, Sanjay Bharti 28 not out, R.K. Chawla 25, Rohit Jhadav three for 54). — Our Staff Reporter
