CHENNAI, JAN. 21. Grandmasters R.B. Ramesh and Koneru Humpy will lead the Indian challenge in the International Open chess tournament to be held at Hotel President from today. The 210 entries comprise players from twelve countries and ten of them are Grandmasters. This is the biggest open chess tournament in South India with a prize fund of Rs. 5 lakhs. Grandmaster Pavel Smirnov of Russia is the top seed by virtue of his higher rating. The 13-round schedule with many double rounds is bound to make the event a tough and enduring one. The 12-day event is organised jointly by Win TV and Saranya Chess Centre and sponsored by Orient Flying School, Pondicherry. Other top Indian stars who will be seen in action are WGM Dronavalli Harika and National junior champion M.R. Venkatesh (Bharat Petroleum) who got his International Master title this week. The event was inaugurated by Mr. S. Thirunavukkarasar, Minister of State for Telecommunications, on Wednesday. The first round is slated for Thursday afternoon. Entry for spectators is free.
