NELLORE, JAN. 21. Rosamma, the woman from Dubagunta village in Nellore district, who inspired people to launch an agitation against the consumption of liquor more than a decade ago, has once again pleaded for total prohibition so that women could live in peace. Addressing a public meeting at the Town Hall arranged by the District Mahila Congress on Wednesday, she reiterated her commitment and concern for the poorer sections of society. Her address assumes significance in view of the allegations against the State Government that its policies were resulting in `flow of liquor.' She, however, criticised the media for often distorting her views. The Narasaraopet MP, N. Janardhana Reddy, questioned the competence of the recent order by Government in appointing the Zilla Parishad chairmen as chiefs of the proposed district level planning bodies, while at the same time appointing the Collectors as `working chairmen,' which gave ample powers to officials. He wanted to know the reasons for dissolving the Assembly and charged the Chief Minister with deceiving the public. The All India Mahila Congress (AIMC) president, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, claimed that it was her party, which gave real empowerment to women and was also instrumental in strengthening the cooperative movement besides bringing in a white revolution to benefit the farmers. According to her, the DWCRA concept was initiated by the Congress, as the party was always thinking of women's welfare. She appealed to people to dislodge the TDP Government in the State and the NDA Government at the Centre. Senior party functionary, Anam Vivekananda Reddy, State Mahila Congress chief, J. Geetha Reddy, ex-MLA of Venkatagiri, N. Rajyalakshmi, and others spoke. The vice-president, AIMC, P. Lakshmi, presided.
