Belgaum
By Our Staff Correspondent
BELGAUM, JAN. 21. With the consecration of Sri Ramakrishna Temple at the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram in Belgaum on Friday, it is said that the wish of Swami Vivekananda to have a permanent centre for Ramakrishna Mission's work in the city would have been realised. The itinerant monk on his way to Kanyakumari stayed here for 13 days in October 1892. After four days at the house of Sri Bhate, he spent nine days as a guest at the official residence of the then Sub-Divisional Forest Officer, Haripada Mitra, on the fort premises. This house was subsequently used as a forest guesthouse. The S.M. Krishna Government handed over this house to the Ramakrishna Mission in June 2000. Later, the house was renovated as Swami Vivekananda Memorial, which was inaugurated by the Chief Minister. Srimat Swami Smaranandaji Maharaj laid the foundation stone for the new building of the Ashram on May 23, 2001. A Sadhu Nivas, one of the main buildings on the ashram premises, was constructed in two years. The Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, inaugurated it in April last. The final block, including the temple and the administrative wing, was completed recently.
