THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 21. The Rural Development and Registration Minister, C.F. Thomas, today informed the Assembly that the State Government would favourably consider the proposal seeking to reduce the stamp duty and other levies charged for gift and partition deeds. Replying to a calling-attention motion, moved by Thomas Chazhikkadan of the Kerala Congress (M), the Minister said the Government was aware of the anomaly which had come up in the backdrop of its decision to reduce the stamp duty, surcharge and registration charges through an Ordinance issued last month. Mr. Chazhikkadan, while welcoming the Government decision to reduce stamp duty, registration charges and surcharge and fixing of fair value of land, urged the State Government to take urgent steps to rectify the defects in the draft order fixing fair value for land transactions in the State. He said it was a good thing that the Government had reduced the stamp duty and registration fee, but the benefit was not available for gift and partition deeds, which continued to attract 7 per cent duty. Since the stamp duty and other levies had been reduced, it was only just that the rates for this category should also be reduced correspondingly, he contended.
