CAMPCO a model cooperative agency, says Minister

By Our Staff Correspondent

PUTTUR, JAN. 21. The Union Minister of State for Finance (Revenue), Shreepad Yesso Naik, said here on Wednesday that the Central Areca nut and Coca Marketing and Processing Cooperative Ltd. (CAMPCO) was a model cooperative agency in the country.

He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating an administrative building of the CAMPCO chocolate factory constructed at a cost of Rs. 50 lakhs here.

Mr. Naik claimed that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government had implemented a number of pro-farmer measures. The Government on Tuesday announced the setting up of a high-power national commission for farmers, privatisation in the procurement of foodgrains for exports and a new scheme to provide urban services in rural areas. He claimed the Government had implemented several reforms in agriculture and food processing sectors.

The MP, V. Dhananjaya Kumar, said the Government was likely to reduce the interest rate on agriculture loans shortly. Farmers would benefit if the interest rate on farm loans were reduced to seven per cent. He said the country was emerging as a market for consumer goods. Farmers should get better prices for their produces and at the same time farm products should be made available to consumers at reasonable rates.

He accused the State Government of delaying contributing its share while announcing the Market Intervention Scheme for areca nut last year. He claimed the Centre had taken the first initiative to bring areca nut under the scheme.

Mr. Dhananjaya Kumar said the cooperative sector could provide solution to the problems prevailing in the farm sector.

The seer of Edneer Math, Keshavananda Bharathi Swamiji, was present.

The President of CAMPCO Ltd., B. Nagaraja Shetty, presided over the function. Soothrabettu Jagannath Rai, President, Puttur Town Municipal Council, G.R. Krishna Das, Managing Director, CAMPCO Ltd., participated.

The Vice-President of CAMPCO, V. Srikrishna Bhat, welcomed the gathering. The Director of CAMPCO, Sanjeeva Matandoor, proposed a vote of thanks. New chocolate products of CAMPCO were launched.
