Hearing impaired artist plans 26-hour session

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, JAN. 21. Ganesh Shetty, artist and a hearing impaired person, will attempt to paint for 26 hours non-stop to mark the Republic Day.

The 30-year-old artist is planning to begin the exercise at 6 a.m. on Sunday. The objective behind the venture is to draw attention to the problems faced by deaf people.

Mr. Shetty, unlike other people who take things passively, has been trying to bring about some change through art. "I have been painting since childhood," he says. Since 1984, he has been contesting in painting competitions successfully. His younger brother, Srinivas, a software engineer, says Mr. Shetty has had his work exhibited at many places in the city.

Mr. Srinivas will be with his brother throughout the latter's "paint fest" on Republic Day. "This will be his first but he plans to do many more," Mr. Srinivas told The Hindu.

Mr. Shetty is very unhappy at the way deaf people are treated in society. "Our parents have never differentiated between me and Ganesh or our other siblings. Ganesh was always considered normal though he was the only one born deaf," Mr. Srinivas says.

The Government had done nothing for people with this disability, he said. "Ganesh is particularly concerned about other deaf artists like him. He wants to help them," explains the proud brother.

"Helping poor people makes me proud. The aged, the orphans, and the handicapped cannot fend for themselves. I have always had one thing in mind, that is to help the disabled," says Mr. Shetty. He was inspired to do this by his father, Chandranna, "who goes to orphanages, old age homes, and other places to distribute food."

Mr. Shetty is the Secretary of an organisation called Karnataka Charity and Environment Development based on Kilari Road (email: karnforest@yahoo.com).
