The French model

Sir, — We could learn from the French electoral system. Elections there are held in two stages, on two consecutive Sundays. There is no limit to the number of candidates contesting a post in the first round. But in the run-off only the two best-placed candidates are retained. The winner is thus assured of a majority of the votes polled. In India, if such a system were adopted pre-election political tie-ups may not be necessary.
